Charlotte's CA18DET Datsun 1600
Update 1st April 2002
Still no print-out for the 180 hp dyno run, sorry! But the car will need to be retuned with the larger turbo so there will hopefully be a comparison dyno chart when that happens.
We manages to source a good second-hand T28 from an S14 which had recently been reconditioned, and also a new gearbox. We started work on putting in the new stuff last weekend but ran into a few difficulties on the way, so work has stopped for the time being but should recommence this week. The old T25 was removed but the new turbo could not be fitted because we needed new gaskets. The gearbox could not be taken out because the motor sits so high - coudn't get to the top bolts because there just isn't room with the motor sitting where it is.
SO here are the jobs for this week (possibly running into next week too):
- dropping the motor down on standard 1600 engine mounts which luckily we kept (currently the motor is mounted on VL Commodore items which are just too big and cause the motor to sit up way too high)
- put the new turbo in with new gaskets, and thoroughly flush out the oil lines to the turbo (we think blocked or reduced-flow lines may have caused the death of the previous turbo)
- replace the gearbox
- re-mount the fuel system along with a larger 1.5L surge tank in the engine bay, and remove the fuel tank and make sure it is cleaned out well before replacing it
- tuning
Below are some comparison pics of the new and old turbos, along with the standard exhaust manifold (this will be replaced by a custom unit one day), the VL turbo fuel pump and the old surge tank which is being replaced by a larger boot-mounted one.
